Buzz: Brady Quinn to Visit Jets?

avatar

Back on draft day in 2007, the Jets jumped up in the draft .. it wasn’t clear who they were going to get, but the constant camera on Brady Quinn and his consoling bleach blonde girlfriend almost caused my heart to stop each time they showed it.

Of course, the Jets chose Darrelle Revis, and the rest is history, but now, almost five years later, the Jets might be bringing Quinn to New York after all.  According to sources out of Denver, Brady Quinn will be visiting the Jets tomorrow.

I’m not opposed to Quinn backing up Sanchez, it might be something of a Walk-Off between these two.  I’m not sure how Quinn would fare in Sparano’s offense, but he’d be a young pedigreed cast-off for the Jets … something of a rehab project.  Still, the most important thing is that the Jets need a QB who can step into a simplified offense and still win games.  Can Quinn do that?  His last extended action in 2009 was pretty miserable … maybe given some time he could be good again, but he’s certainly not of t

This will certainly become a Mike and Mike highlight.

  2. avatarMassive says:

I like Brady Quinn as our backup.

  3. avatarPete B. says:

Not exactly the back up i had in mind, but he is (in my opinion) better than a 40 year old mark brunell. As far as safeties go, I would be very happy if the Jets signed Nelson as long as they dont break the bank.

  4. avatarjuunit says:

What’s McElroy for then? We need a QB who can actually play immediately if Sanchez goes down, not another young project QB. If they go into the season with Quinn and McElroy as Sanchez’s only backup, they’re making the exact same mistake they did with the OL last year.

    • avatarstruckanerve9 says:

Quinn isn’t a young “project” QB. He’s a backup with starting experience who’s been in the league a while. Plus, he’s cheap. Sounds like a win win to me.

      • avatarWolf says:

He would have started in Denver if it hadn’t been for Tebowitis.

    • avatarSuper T says:

Agreed. Why is it so hard for the Jets to find an adequate backup QB? It’s like they only look for QBs without any experience, or QBs with 20+ years of experience.

      • avatarJetObsessed28 says:

Considering the salary cap, and the free agent pool.. who else should they have gotten?

Makes sense to me.. i like it.

  5. avatar Tk says:

McElroy is to hold the clip board.

The Jets are basically looking for a #2 that meets the following criteria.

    1. A Qb that is inexpensive.
    2. A Qb that won’t be too popular (basically a QB that won’t give Sanchez a run for his money in camp and also one that the fan base willing be calling for if Sanchez stinks next year) we don’t want to rattle Sanchez’s fragile “confidence”
    3. One that can actually run the offense should Sanchez get hurt.

IMO it’s in that order too.

  6. avatara57se says:

Brady Quinn is a jerk, please pass…..

  7. avatar Paul says:

He’s started games in this league and has been inconsistent. When he started last, he didn’t look that good, but keep in mind Mangini had just traded away his receiving corps.

    • avatarstruckanerve9 says:

If he was consistent as a starter, don’t you think he’s be starting for someone? There’s a reason he’s a backup.

      • avatar Paul says:

Quinn wouldn’t be my preferred choice. We don’t need our inconsistent starting QB, backed up by an even more inconsistent QB.

  8. avatarFred says:

We would easily have the best looking QB corps in the league.

  9. avatar Paul says:

Come all without, come all within
You’ll not see nothing like Brady Quinn?

Ok showing my age. That song was popular when I was like 2.

  10. avatarUKJetsFan says:

Maybe the desire of FO to sign a cheap, young backup QB is because Penny will be coming on board, in one role or another, once he is finished coaching Sanchez for the spring???

    Can but hope….!

  11. avatara57se says:

Jeez, Paul I think I was like 14 or something….

    • avatar Paul says:

LOL. Sorry, but that still probably makes me older than many who post on this board.

  12. avatar JoeDog says:

Perfect. I want a backup who’s hungry to start and won’t cost much money. If he practices well he’ll keep Sanchez on his toes.

  13. avatarderek says:

    manish says he already visited

    • avatarmattm says:

He sure is wrong a lot.

  14. avatarJet says:

Off topic but how many draft picks do we have this yeAr ?

    • avatarBent says:

      I’m projecting 11 or 12.

  15. avatarSuper T says:

Can we get someone with more experience than Mark Sanchez but less experience than Mark Brunell to be the backup? Is that too much to ask?

  16. avatarderek says:

correction, he has not visited yet

  17. avatarRevis Christ says:

    Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

  18. avatarRExecutioner says:

I don’t think Quinn would be that bad, I’d def prefer over Stanton, Quinn only had 1 year in Cleveland and that was with no wrs and last year he was the qb that was supposedly the best of the bronco 3 but never got a fair look because of a certain someone

  19. avatarSackDance99 says:

I like the idea of Drew Stanton more. Better mobility and a better arm.

    • avatarjoeyboy79 says:

      I agree Sack.

      • avatarjoeyboy79 says:

I looked in to him and his worst stats were in 09 which hurt is overall stats. In 2010, he actually did OK. He rushed for 113 yds with almost 7 yds per run. He averaged around 200 yds with close to 60 completion%.He was close to an 80 QB rating for 2010. He beat the packers and gave the lions their first road win in 3 years over the bucks. He can throw!

  20. avatara57se says:

    And Stanton isn’t a jerk…..

  21. avatarJohnny Reefer says:

    Quinn wouldn’t be bad.

Side note. Anyone watch UNC Ash. get robbed? Cuse was giving that game

    • avatarBent says:

      “Quinn wouldn’t be bad.”

There’s a first time for everything!

    • avatar MEL31602 says:

UNC Ash was not robbed. There was the one bad missed call on the goaltend but since UNC Ash did not lose by 2 you can’t say that cost them the game. The lane violation was a correct call (one Bulldog players’ foot was clearly in the lane when the SU player still had the ball in his hands) and while the call on the sideline was bad it didnt really hurt the Bulldogs because if called properly it would have been a foul on them anyway and SU would have had to shoot free throws like they ended up doing less than a second later

      • avatar MEL31602 says:

Sorry for the rant but everyone on Twitter is screaming about the refs and I just dont get it.

        • avatarJohnny Reefer says:

the goal tend? the blatant out of bounds call that change the entire game.

AND YOU DO NOT call a line violation at that time, EVER!

          • avatar MEL31602 says:

Goal tend only cost Asheville two points. They lost by seven. And I’m not sure which out of bounds call you mean, but the one with Triche at the end he was clearly fouled even though he was last to touch the ball so he should have been shooting free throws anyway. And like one of my classmates said on Twitter, refs did not make UNCA’s best shooter go 1-13 from the field.

            • avatar MEL31602 says:

And what’s the point of having rules against lane violations if you don’t call them every time they occur?

              • avatarJohnny Reefer says:

dude, with some odd seconds left, they were down 3, and SHOULD have got the ball back. Instead Cuse did.

you know situational basketball? If that “one” call never happened, it could have been a completely differen’t ball game. Plain and simple, they got robbed. The goaltend also has nothing to do with the final score, because again, situational basketball. They would have been down 1.

Tell me, when have you ever seen that called, with the game on the line? Obviously your a Cuse fan, so you’re prolly extremely bias right now.

                but one more thing..

Ending scores, in basketball never dictate how the game went. Since, they send everyone to the line, the last 20 seconds of the game. The miss a shot, then send the other team back to the line.

                • avatarBent says:

                  Mel’s not a dude, dude.

                  • avatarBent says:

Are you upset because this puts you out of the running for the signed Marcus Dixon jersey?

  22. avatarLew says:

Am I crazy to think that McElroy can actually be the 2? His arm is the limitation but the guy showed poise before he got hurt in pre-season and won a national championship. Again, I admit to possibly being crazy but I think he’s as good as Brady Quinn (less arm, more toughness, moxie, whatever).

    • avatarLou says:

I think that too. Rather have McElroy get a chance as #2 then some cast off of another team or 40+ year old QBs that are only around to act as big brother to sanchez.

      • avatarclarkgaines1979 says:

i agree with both of you guys. I think, albeit in a brief exposure, that Mcelroy looked to be what you want out of a back up QB. And to correct someone earlier who stated about quinn being inconsistent and not wanting an inconsistent backup QB….. If backups QB’S were “consistently good” they wouldn’t be backup QB’s.

I understand that someone like Orton or campbell has had some success. But there “inconsistency” is what has kept them bouncing around. Besides, where they realistic prospects considering the money they would want?

  23. avatar nj-e-t-sfx says:

AFAIK, the only notable accomplishment in Quinn’s career was dropping so far and so embarrassingly on draft day that they now protect players from being publicly humiliated.

His major pro accomplishments include being dumped by Cleveland!

I don’t see how he can offer Sanchez anything in terms of guidance, experience or motivation, so the only thing he could possibly do is be a marginal backup we would all hope never has to play for any length of time.

    I’ll pass.

    • avatarjoeyboy79 says:

If push comes to shove, I would go with Stanton.

  24. avatarF 16 says:

Just like Clemmons, I don’t think he got a fair shot. Correct me if I’m wrong.

    • avatarF 16 says:

Like, lets say, someone like Sanchaz.

      • avatar nj-e-t-sfx says:

Sanchez 1st year, Clemmons split everything with Sanchez and couldn’t beat out the rookie. He had the opportunity to show he was clearly better (as he should have been at that point) and didn’t, so Sanchez was handed the job.

Quinn had some opportunities against several not-exactly-HOF QB’s to show he was better and didn’t.

I want a guy as backup who’s either experienced or someone who rises when given an opportunity. Not someone who shows nothing when he gets his chance.

        • avatarF 16 says:

That’s right, they were both in camp together, forgot.

        • avatarjoeyboy79 says:

I remember that competition and many beat writers had Clemens holding his own. They had to give the nod to Sanchez. How would it look for Management if Clemens beat out their investment and #5. I am not saying it was the wrong move as Sanchez is ready to fly with the right pieces around him and Clemens could have never gotten to two afc playoff games. I do feel that Clemens, if given a legitimate shot somewhere , could be a sreviceable and decent starter. He has never been given a real shot due to Chad and Sanchez situations.

          • avatarclarkgaines1979 says:

i agree. Again, i’ll state schotty’s record with his QB’s. The problem is once you “flub” your first chance, you get buried and never get another one. at least that occurs far too often. I think Clemens could have become decent. But i didn’t like how easily he seemed to accept his situation. Maybe he didn’t behind closed doors…we’ll likely never know.

  25. avatarYoooooooooo says:

I like this as well! Much better than drew Stanton!

    • avatarjoeyboy79 says:

      Not sure on that one.

  26. avatarThe Ed(itor) says:

In my humble opinion, Brady Quinn is a far superior QB to Stanton. Could Michael Floyd be added on draft day?

    • avatarBent says:

Full disclosure: You’re a Notre Dame fan, aren’t you?

  27. avatar Brian Serviss says:

one horrible QB trying to push another horrible QB? yea this is not gonna work

  28. avatarrunleon29 says:

we’d have the most handsome QB tandem in the league, if nothing else. i’m just sayin’…

  29. avatarJets-Fan-4-Life says:

    Pass, we already have McElroy.

    • avatarelmoron says:

Who I seriously hope is not in jeopardy.

  30. avatarEddie D says:

Doesnt matter who the QB is at this point, our WR corp is SORRY…there is a reason these guys like Garcon are being paid BIG money…its becoming a premium position in a pass happy, pass friendly NFL

The WR group is WORSE than they were LAST year at this point…and Chaz Schilens is supposed to fix this???

They have to come away from Free Agency with a bonafide starting safety and #2 WR…anything else is an EPIC FAIL…AGAIN…by Tanny and Rex

  31. avatarLIJetsFan says:

I think the FO is low balling the back up QB FA spot because they feel McElroy might beat then out in camp anyway, so way pay up.

    • avatarclarkgaines1979 says:

could be. I thought he showed me what i would want out of a backup QB (ala pat ryan) … A smart QB, not easily rattled by the pressure, and a guy who is a proven winner.

His arm strength may keep him a backup…. but still few teams have steve young as a backup QB.

  32. avatar TannyB says:

I don’t want Stanton or Quinn. I want Cooper Manning.
