As the NHL season enters the month of March that means that the trade deadline is coming up on March 21. The Devils look to be potential buyers at the trade deadline instead of being sellers regardless of their poor record. One trade that has been speculated is Vancouver Canuck forward Brock Boeser.
Who is Brock Boeser?
Boeser is 25 years old and is playing in his seventh season. He was selected as the 23rd pick in the 2015 draft by the Vancouver Canucks. So far Boeser has played a total of 302 games with a total of 240 points which is a combination of 113 goals and 127 assists. So far his one standout season was the 2018-2019 season where he totaled 56 points in 69 games played. Boeser has taken a step back as he has averaged around 45 points. He could still be sold fit for the Devils. He is only 25 years old so he’s young and he could be added to the already young core. Though the Devil’s offense is pretty solid when healthy so adding him would not make that much of a difference.
Could Zacha Be Part of The Deal?
There is speculation that if a trade would go down it would have to include Pavel Zacha. Zacha has become a veteran player even though he is only 24 years old. He is currently in his sixth season plus his one game in the 2015-2016 season. Zacha has had his hot streaks but mostly inconsistent. Boeser could be Zacha’s replacement. The trade would not be one for one the Devils would have to include draft picks and other prospects to Vancouver.
In my opinion, I don’t think the trade makes too much sense. First Boeser could potentially be an upgrade but not a big one. Second, even though Zacha is inconsistent I think he fits better with the Devils than Boeser. Third, if the Devils are going to be buyers at the trade deadline I would want the Devils to be looking for goaltenders instead. Goaltending has been a problem this year with backup goaltender Jonathan Bernier out for the season and starting goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood having a heel injury. The team has been mostly using Jon Gillies and has been terrible. A Brock Besser trade would be interesting but in the end, I do not expect it to happen.
