The Isles rebound from a tough loss on Tuesday thanks to a spectacular performance by Anthony Beauvillier. He notched 2 goals in game 5 bringing his playoff total to 6. Overall the Islanders played a solid game scoring in each period.
Beauvillier and the Isles Strike in the First Giving his Team an Early Lead
The Islanders started strong due to an early powerplay as a result of Nic Dowd hooking Casey Cizikas. Unlike the majority of the Islanders’ power-play chances in this series, Beauvillier capitalizes from Brock Nelson‘s feed giving the Isles the lead. The Islanders failed to cash in on the powerplay for the remainder of the game. The Islanders’ defense and goaltending held the Capitals scoreless for the entire period.
New York Continues its Success in the Second
The Islanders continue to dominate the Capitals in Game 5 due to another goal. It was was a thing of beauty thanks to an amazing pass from Josh Bailey to Beauvillier. Brayden Holtby was fooled by an amazing fake allowing Beauvillier to net his second of the game. Semyon Varlamov remained perfect in the net through two periods and the defense was solid yet again getting in front of shots easing things on Varlamov.
The Islanders Advance to the Second Round After Another Spectacular Period
New Yorks’ defense caused problems for the Capitals offense leading the Isles to a shutout. Varlamov was excellent, he stopped all 21 of the Capitals’ shots. As a last resort, the Capitals pulled their goalie and it backfired. Nick Leddy and Bailey scored on the open net to conclude the series.
Keys to Success for the Islanders in Round 2
The Islanders dominated all series long on even strength and will be key for their next matchup. The Islanders must improve on their special teams which were horrible throughout the series. The second line was a major contributor so far in the playoffs and it improves the teams’ offense significantly. The second line includes Nelson, Bailey, and Beauvillier who all had an impact in the series-winning game. The Islanders have had a stellar defense throughout the year and will be relied on for the remainder of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. New York has to continue playing its brand of hockey or things could go wrong for the Islanders just like Game 4. The Islanders reached their limit with the Capitals’ physicality in Game 4 allowing their emotions to get the best of them resulting in their only loss to Washington in the series.
The Islanders are proving their place in the playoffs following two dominant series and must follow these keys to further their playoff push in hope of raising the Stanley Cup. Due to reseeding in this years’ playoffs, their matchup is unknown and they have to wait and see. Nevertheless, if the Islanders continue to enforce their style of play on their opponents, they become a serious threat to anyone that they play.
