The Isles have been playing great in the bubble so far and will face the Flyers in round 2. The Islanders have been outmatching their opponents so far in the playoffs with a 7-2 record and hopes to continue their dominance against the number one seed in the East. Both teams have been playing great so far meaning this series will be extremely close and come down to the wire.
The Islanders’ Strengths
New York has been playing extremely well due to an improved offense with an unbelievable performance from the second line consisting of Anthony Beauvillier, Josh Bailey, and Brock Nelson who have taken their opponents by storm. Bailey and Beauvillier find themselves amongst the league leaders for points and goals respectively. Due to their production, New York has become one of the top teams in all-around ability. The Islanders’ defense continues to make their opponents struggle consistently limiting their opponent to 3 or fewer goals a game. New York’s netminder Semyon Varlamov, has been spectacular making terrific saves consistently; therefore, always giving his team a chance to win.
The Isles’ Weaknesses
The Islanders still need to improve aspects of their game to fare well against Philidelphia. For example, in their five games series against the Capitals, the Isles struggled on the powerplay. If they can improve quickly on this weakness, the Islanders will be in good shape. They had problems on the penalty kill as well and will need to turn things around quickly in order to match up well against Philly.
The Flyers’ Strengths
Philly’s netminder, Carter Hart, has been playing fabulously and usually puts his team in a good spot to win games. Hart has had very few bad games leading many to believe that this series will be low-scoring. The Flyers were undefeated in the round-robin, meaning they were able to rise to the occasion against good teams. Their ability to do well against the best of the best is something that makes them a great team.
The Flyers’ weaknesses
Despite Philidelphia’s success in the round-robin, they had 2 subpar games against the bottom-seed. In both games, the Canadiens scored 5 times and one of those times the Flyers were shutout. The Flyers cannot afford to have below-average performances against the red hot Islanders. Philly must tighten things up to win this series.
Who Has the Edge?
This round 2 matchup will be a very close series and can honestly go either way. In the Islanders’ latest game, they looked better on the power play, which is why they have a slight edge heading into this series. The Islanders have built up momentum throughout the playoffs and it is very high right now after pulling off an upset. Let’s see on Monday if they Islanders can continue their success against the Flyers.
