The Islanders win! They beat the Flyers by a score of 3-1 in Game three of the second round. This game was originally supposed to be played on Thursday, August 27th. But it was postponed due to the shooting of Jacob Blake and racial injustice. The game was moved to today, Saturday, August 29th. The Islanders were the designated home team in this one. But being the home team doesn’t really matter because the game was played in the NHL’s Toronto bubble, which is a neutral site.
The first period
The game started pretty slow, there was a decent scoring chance here and there. But, none of the scoring chances were great. The Islanders turned over the puck a bit in the first period, but the chances were pretty even in the period. Hits and giveaways were very common in the first 10 minutes. But after an icing at the 10:17 mark of the period, shots started ramping up. The play was pretty even until the 5:42 mark of the period, where Tyler Pitlick scored on a wrist shot past Semyon Varlamov. Pitlick’s goal was assisted by Scott Laughton and Matt Niskanen, Semyon Varlamov was screened on the shot. After that goal, the Islanders started playing a lot better. They really took a step up after giving up the first goal. But, the period ended with the score being 1-0.
The second period
The second period was when the Isles took over. They dominated play after the Flyers goal. The Islanders took a bunch of shots at the start of the second. Then, Mat Barzal missed two wide-open nets in the period. The better chance was a wrap-around, where Barzal couldn’t angle it towards the net. It was almost just a matter of time until the Islanders would get a goal. Matt Martin sent the puck to the corner of a giveaway. Barzal was able to get the puck and sent it back to Matt Martin and he scored! The puck barely got passed Carter Hart and that tied the game 1-1. After the goal, the play was pretty even. Until five seconds left where Derrick Brassard passed it to Leo Komarov which also barely got in. The period ended with the Islanders winning 2-1.
The third period
The Islanders needed to hold on to that lead to take the Game three win. The Flyers took a few shots in the start of the period, nothing beat Varlamov. Then Robert Hagg slashed Jean-Gabriel Pageau which gave the Islanders their first power play of the game. The first half of the power play wasn’t so good and the Flyers were able to clear the puck. Then, the Islanders were able to do something that they’re horrible at, they had a good zone entry!
Good zone entries equal good power plays for the Islanders. That’s because Anders Lee was able to score on the power play and the puck went off Carter Hart’s stick and it went in! Lee’s goal was assisted by Jordan Eberle and Ryan Pulock. After the 3-1 goal, it was lock down time for the Islanders. Then the Islanders also failed on a power play. Then Anders Lee took a penalty for not having his helmet on. This was the time for the Flyers to answer. But, they weren’t able to score 6 on 4. The Islanders locked it down and the game ended.
So the Islanders win game three. Meaning the Islanders go up 2-1 in the best of 7 series. Varlamov was really good, especially in the third. The Islanders were able to lock down in the third. The bottom 6 was great. Goal scorers were Matt Martin, Leo Komarov, and Anders Lee. Overall the Islanders played a great game, they were just good. They played Islanders hockey, that’s what they want to do. So, they accomplished that. The next game is tomorrow at 8:00 on NBC. The Islanders and Flyers will be playing in the Sunday Night Football spot. They’ll look to go up 3-1 in the series tomorrow!
