Throughout the last few years, the New York Knicks have struggled badly and haven’t been going in any direction. However, a potential star in New York could massively change the Knicks for the better.
Currently, younger players like RJ Barrett and Mitchell Robinson are struggling and are unable to reach their full potential without other players helping them. However, with a star who can change the mentality of younger players, their development may be in good hands. This season, the board’s expectation was that power-forward Julius Randle could play that role. In spite of that, Randle did quite the opposite. He kept the ball out of Barrett’s hands and significantly diminished the role of the other younger players. The goal this season might be to bring in a player to do a completely different job than Randle. The Knicks may look to sign a player who younger players can play off of, and will help increase their potential.
The most realistic options for the Knicks
A more short term solution could be point guard Chris Paul. The 35-year-old is a very smart player who could surely improve the basketball IQ of the younger players. With the Oklahoma City Thunder this season, he has helped guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander tremendously. Additionally, Paul led the Thunder, who originally had a 0.2% chance of making the playoffs, to a game 7 in the first round. Paul has shown how great a leader he is, and could be a great fit in New York.
Another option could be big-man Joel Embiid. After being swept by the Boston Celtics in the first round of the playoffs, the Cameroonian has made clear he is unsure if his future lies in Philadelphia. Embiid has said he would be “OK” if he didn’t stay with the 76ers, fans have been led to believe he wants out of Philly.
A last option that the Knicks may go for, is shooting guard/point guard Victor Oladipo. The 28 year old has expressed interest in leaving Indiana. Oladipo would play as the point guard the Knicks need for this season. Additionally, he could potentially fit very well with some of the younger Knick players, and could vastly help them improve. Although he isn’t especially young, Oladipo could be a great option who isn’t worth as much in trade value.
The less realistic option
After losing a 3-1 lead against the Nuggets, Donovan Mitchell looked disgruntled in Utah and the Knicks seemed prepared to make a move on the 6’3 guard. With multiple connections in president Leon Rose and assistant coach Johniee Bryant, the Knicks seemed to have a foot in the door. However, to many people’s surprise, days after allowing an embarrassing comeback, Mitchell signed a new max deal with the Jazz. A deal seems far less likely but isn’t a move Knicks fans can surely rule out.
The main benefits
Along with supporting the younger players, a star in New York could have some big pluses. Firstly, a star could bring in more high-level players who currently aren’t as interested in the Knicks. Currently, New York isn’t an appealing place for great players, but if the Knickerbockers can sign a star, this could change. One example is Carmelo Anthony, who has said he’d be more inclined in a reunion with the Knicks if Chris Paul were there. Another plus would be excitement from fans who can barely watch Knicks games as it is.
If the New York Knicks are able to sign any of these stars, or another, they can become a much more exciting team, full of potential.
