After a 7 week break, the English Premier League is back. Now with more teams than in recent years competing for the title, every game will be important. After the first week of games, here’s your recap.
Arsenal Strong in Season Opener
Arsenal 3-0 Fulham: Arsenal started their season strong with a 3-0 win against Fulham. A very impressive game for new signings Willian, as well as Gabriel. Willian started his Arsenal campaign impressively with a hat-trick of assists. Gabriel, recently signed defender additionally scored one of the three goals as well as keeping a clean sheet. An overall great performance from them, and if Arsenal can consistently play at this level, this could be an exciting year for fans.
Crystal Palace 1-0 Southampton: Not an extremely surprising result for anyone. A goal from Wilfried Zaha in the first 20 minutes sealed it for the Eagles. At 27 years old, Zaha will be hoping to bring Crystal Palace to the next level.
Mo Salah Nails Hattrick
Liverpool 4-3 Leeds: One of the most interesting games of the week was certainly this one. Although Liverpool one, Leeds kept the game very close, and have shown they mean business in the Premier League. Leeds kept Liverpool tied until the 87th minute, when Mohamed Salah completed a hat trick. A standout player was winger Mo Salah, who converted 2 penalties, scored a third goal, and carried Liverpool to a win.
Newcastle Down West Ham
West Ham 0-2 Newcastle: West Ham began the new season quite poorly to a loss to Newcastle. Goals from Callum Wilson, and Jeff Hendrick sealed the win for Magpies. Although West Ham held the majority of possession, Newcastle were the far better team, and this was a great start to their season.
Leicester City Score Three
West Brom 0-3 Leicester City: After finishing 5th in the table last season, Leicester have started off well in the league. Although they lost both full-backs (one through injury, and one who transferred to Chelsea) , they didn’t show any problems at the back. Jamie Vardy, who at 33 now, has shown no sign of slowing down, with 2 goals to show for it.
Everton Upsets Spurs
Tottenham 0-1 Everton: After an underwhelming season for the Spurs, they were hoping to bounce back this season. However, their first game of the season didn’t show for that, as Everton embarrassed them. After coach Carlo Ancelotti brought in midfield pair of James Rodriguez, and Allan, they looked ready to compete for a top 6 spot. The only worry was whether or not they would fit well with the rest of the squad. However, against the Spurs, they showed fluidity and are impressive to watch. Everton fans will hope their club will be able to keep up this consistency throughout the season.
Wolves Down Sheffield
Sheffield United 0-2 Wolves: Over the summer, Wolves star striker Raul Jimenez was linked with a move away from the club, which would be a big loss for the club. Fortunately for Wolves, Jimenez has stayed, and has gotten Wolves starting strong against an underrated Sheffield side. Sheffield, who recently lost their star goalkeeper Dean Henderson to Manchester United, did not seem like the same confident side they were last season. A goal from Jimenez, along with Romain Saiss sealed a win for the Wanderers.
Chelsea Beats Brighton
Brighton 1-3 Chelsea: Over the summer, Frank Lampard went on a massive spree and signed the likes of some of the biggest stars in Europe. Timo Werner, Kai Havertz, Hakim Ziyech, Ben Chilwell, and Thiago Silva were all brought in. Although only Werner and Havertz played, Chelsea played well against Brighton. Recently signed player Kai Havertz had a very quiet game, while Timo Werner won a penalty for the Blues. Goals from Jorginho, Reece James, and Zouma sealed the win. Although Chelsea won, there were slight rough patches during the game where Chelsea made the game much easier for Brighton.
If the Premier League consistently produces games at this level, this could be one of the best seasons in recent years. The race to finish in the top 6 will surely be exciting. With all new transfe
