Week 5: Arizona Cardinals vs New York Jets Recap

Currently, the New York Jets remain winless as they lost to the Arizona Cardinals by a score of 30-10. This past Sunday was Gang Green’s first game this season without Sam Darnold calling signals.

The game was an utter bore for both teams. Joe Flacco started for the first time in over a year. Nothing really changed with the offense as they continued to put people to bed. The defense showed no effort in trying to stop DeAndre Hopkins or Kyler Murray. The Arizona Cardinals committed penalty after penalty. As a whole, this game was a yawn.

Cardinals TD is the Lonely Score in Quarter One

Both teams would start with three and outs to start the game. Then, the Jets would go three and out, once again.

The Cardinals would make their second drive interesting. Arizona was able to move the ball downfield this time around. On a third and one from the Jets’ 29-yard line,  Chase Edmonds was able to escape defenders for a Cardinals touchdown. The Cardinals went up 7-0.

Jets Barely Score In the Second Quarter

To open the second quarter, Gang Green was able to move the ball downfield. On 3rd-and-1 from the Cardinals’ 13 yard-line, the Jets tried running fullback Trevon Wesco up the middle to convert. That effort failed. Aggressively, Gang Green tried to convert 4th-and-1 on a halfback dive to Le’Veon Bell. The result was a turnover on downs.

The Cardinals started deep in their own territory. The drive did not last long as Jets linebacker Avery Williamson intercepted a deflected pass thrown by Kyler Murray. The ball would be returned to the Cardinals’ 10-yard line.

Even with better field position, the Jets were not able to score a touchdown. Instead, Gang Green converted on a 26-yard field goal from kicker Sam Ficken. The score was now 7-3 in favor of the Arizona Cardinals.

On the ensuing drive, the Arizona Cardinals were able to move the ball downfield again. From the 2 yard-line, they would score on a touchdown run from quarterback Kyler Murray. The Cardinals extended their lead to 14-3.

On the next drive, the Jets attempted to move the ball into the red zone. But, Jets quarterback Joe Flacco was sacked by Cardinals’ linebacker Dennis Gardeck, further destroying any offensive momentum. Gang Green punted the ball.

With 50 seconds to go in the half, the Cardinals managed to drive down the field. The result of this drive was a field goal made by Arizona Cardinals kicker Zane Gonzalez.

The score by halftime was 17-3 Cardinals.

Jets Finally Score in Quarter Three

To start the second half, both teams punted a combined three times. However, the New York Jets would get something going.

Once again, Gang Green was able to move the ball effectively. The biggest key to the downfield ball movement was a 52-yard strike from Joe Flacco to Jamison Crowder, helping the offense gain some fire.

Flacco and Crowder connected again. This time on an 11-yard pass for a Jets touchdown. All of a sudden, they were back in it. The score was 17-10 Cardinals.

The Arizona Cardinals would answer back on the ensuing drive. Once again, they moved the ball downfield effectively fast. The Cardinals scored on a one-yard touchdown run from running back Kenyan Drake. The Cardinals extended their lead to 24-10.

Cardinals Score Again to Shut Down Jets

To open the final quarter, the Jets had the ball. While preparing to move the ball downfield, the team ran a trick play with wide receiver Jeff Smith as the quarterback. The result was a sack made by Cardinals safety Budda Baker, sinking the Jets in their own territory. That play destroyed the drive.

On the ensuing drive, the Cardinals sealed the game with a 38-yard touchdown reception from DeAndre Hopkins. The two-point conversion failed but the Cardinals went up by a score of 30-10.

The ensuing drive would see the Jets turn the ball over on downs.

The Arizona Cardinals won their second game by a score of 30-10. The Jets remain winless.

In Week 6, the New York Jets will travel to Miami to face the Dolphins. This week, the Arizona Cardinals will face the Seattle Seahawks at home.
