Free Agency in the National Hockey League began October 9th, only a couple of days after the draft. In this short span, the Islanders and general manager, Lou Lamoriello, made some moves. The Islanders needed to clear salary to keep their team together for the most part, although many analysts predicted that either Nick Leddy or Johnny Boychuk would be moved. However, Lamoriello accepted that he would have to trade the rights of restricted free agent Devon Toews instead of one of the veteran defensemen. Toews is now a part of the Avalanche and was swapped for two second-round picks in 2021 and 2022.
Lamoriello and Joe Sakic Seem to be on Good Terms
The Islanders made two trades with Colorado in the past week. The Islanders lost the offense-minded Devon Toews in the second exchange. However, the first trade has not quite got any attention. The Islanders acquired A.J. Greer for Kyle Burroughs before the Toews trade. Do the two consecutive trades point towards a good trading partner for the next few years with Avalanche general manager, Joe Sakic? Only time will tell.
Andy Greene and Cory Schneider Reunite
Lamoriello loves to bring in talent he has worked with in the past. This past trade deadline, Andy Greene joined the Island, while Cory Schneider signed with the Isles following his release by the Devils. Greene resigned this offseason on a short-term deal following a successful playoff. Can this connection help Schneider turn around a career on the decline? Schneider will likely start as the goalie for the Bridgeport Soundtigers, but if the Islanders feel the need to send Ilya Sorokin down Schneider and Greene will be reunited.
Other Free Agency News
The Islanders signed two minor-leaguers to a two-way contract. Austin Czarnik and Grant Hutton have agreed to terms with the Islanders. Although nothing is official yet, Matt Martin is expected to return this season on a short-term deal. With many star players signing elsewhere, who can the Isles sign this offseason?
