What To Expect Out Of Noah Syndergaard in 2021

Former All-Star pitcher Noah Syndergaard had an eventful season in 2020 after getting diagnosed with a torn UCL which required Tommy John surgery. It was obviously a heartbreaking loss, but hopefully, Syndergaard can return like “Thor” in 2021. First, he will have to recover from a torn ulnar collateral ligament that he suffered in Spring Training of last year.

What To Expect?

Syndergaard won’t be ready on Opening Day of the 2021 season but will be expected back at some point. The Mets had a disappointing 2020 season, but it had nothing to do with the offense. As a matter of fact, if The Mets had their 2019 healthy pitching staff, they would have probably made the playoffs. The Mets bullpen and starting rotation excluding DeGrom performed well below expectations. The Mets’ entire pitching staff had a 4.98 ERA which led to many disappointing losses. There is one statement that is obvious: With Syndergaard, the numbers would have been better.

When back, Syndergaard will be heavily relied on. Marcus Stroman is unlikely to resign with the Mets this offseason, and Wacha and Porcello are also unlikely to be resigned. The Mets are expected to go after pitchers like Trevor Bauer this offseason, but nothing will affect Syndergaard’s role.

It is hard to predict Syndergaard’s 2021 season because there are so many factors at stake. Many pitchers can’t return to form after Tommy John because their velocity numbers are different. This is a possibility for a guy such as Syndergaard, who relies on high velocity so often. Another factor in predicting Syndergaard’s season is his timetable for return. It is way too early for the Mets to give status on his timetable.
