Early Friday evening the Devils announced the signing of former Winnipeg Jets defenseman Dmitry Kulikov. With this move, Tom Fitzgerald added his third player to a roster that was lacking in terms of talent. This signing comes after the team decided not to extend a qualifying offer to Mirco Muller. Kulikov at the time of writing is 29 years of age but will soon turn 30. He is under contract for the 2021 season as he signed a 1-year pact worth 1.15 million dollars.
Kulikov is more of a physical defenseman as he has never really put up any kind of decent offensive numbers. In 51 games in 2020, he tallied only ten points (two goals and eight assists). With that said this is exactly what the Devils needed to round out their defense. Look for Kulikov to be an imposing force on the back end with his physical style of play. Expect him to be a third-line defenseman for opening night however, he can move into a bigger role if he can produce at the offensive end of the ice. This is a very low-risk high reward signing for Fitzgerald and the Devils.
