In less than 24 hours after suffering a painful loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, the New York Giants traded linebacker Markus Golden to the Arizona Cardinals in exchange for a sixth-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.
]The Cardinals drafted Golden back in 2015 in the second-round out of Missouri. Golden signed with the Giants in the 2019 offseason to join his former defensive coordinator James Bettcher. Golden led the Giants in sacks that year with 10.5. He was the first Giants’ linebacker to record over ten sacks since Lawrence Taylor in 1990.
Many expected this to happen, since Golden’s time on the field began to decrease. Golden played only 33 percent (27) of the defensive snaps on Thursday against the Eagles.
The Giants drafted four linebackers this offseason as well as signing Kyler Fackrell. Carter Coughlin and Cam Brown are seeing increasing snaps as weeks go by. To note, T.J. Brunson saw his first special teams snaps yesterday as he was a healthy scratch for the first six games. Lorenzo Carter and Oshane Ximines were expected to see an increase in snaps before the season, as both are still blossoming pass-rushers.
Kyler Fackrell, being a fit in Patrick Graham’s defense, accumulated a total of three sacks, eight pressures, 23 tackles, six tackles for a loss, three hurries, one forced fumble, and two quarterback knockdowns so far in seven games this season.
Here are Golden’s stats in 1 1/2 seasons with the Giants:
- 23 Games Played
- Four Games Started
- 1.5 sacks
- 82 tackles
- 33 quarterback hits
- one fumble recovery
- 15 tackles for a loss
- 52 pressures
- 20 hurries
- 16 quarterback knockdowns
