The New York Mets had a disappointing season in 2020, but that was a shortened season in which they had injuries all around. In 2021, the Mets look to turn things around to compete in a tough NL East division.
NL East in 2021
The Mets will have to improve if they want to win the NL East in 2021, especially with the Braves in their division. The Braves made it to the NLCS in 2020, and that was without star pitcher Mike Soroka, who was out most of the season. The Braves have big bats, including Ronald Acuna, Ozzie Albies, Marcell Ozuna, and the former Met, Travis D’Arnaud. But the Mets also have big bats that need to turn things around in 2021. Jeff McNeil, an All-Star the year before, was not effective in 2020. In 2021, McNeil has the chance to lead the NL in batting average. Pete Alonso led the Mets in home runs for the 2nd straight year, but there is always room for improvement. Alonso needs to be the significant X Factor if the Mets want to win the NL East and make the playoffs. Justin Wilson had a tough 2020 after a fantastic 2019 in the bullpen. All in all, it is too late to look back at the 2020 season. The Mets had the skill; it just didn’t work.
2 X-Factors to win the division in 2021
Noah Syndergaard– We know Jacob DeGrom will perform well, but we don’t know if Syndergaard will. Many pitchers’ velocities go down after Tommy John Surgery, and this would dramatically affect Syndergaard, a guy who relies on his fastball so often. The Mets had trouble with their starting pitchers last season, but Syndergaard can be enough to improve the rotation, especially if his slider can get going again.
Edwin Diaz– Edwin Diaz once had a record-breaking season with 57 saves was on the Mariners. We did see improvement after Diaz’s terrible 2019 season. If the Mets get back 2018 Edwin Diaz, winning the division will come at ease. The Mets have lost many games in the past years due to pitching. Their offense came to play, but the pitching blew it. Diaz can win the Mets at least ten more games if he pitches well in 2021.
The Mets offense should dominate in 2021. The only thing that can prevent the Mets from making the playoffs is their pitching. As good as having a two time Cy Young winner and a few All-Stars in the bullpen looks, the Mets have lost tons of games due to pitching. With a new ownership group for the Mets, we can expect some changes to bring the Mets a playoff berth.
