A personal matter breached his contract with both the MLB as well as the Yankees.
Now begins the long road back.
Upon said return, the Yankees activated him on October 10, 2020. Days later, he was assigned to Toros del Este.
Here he has to earn the trust of Hal Steinbrenner again following the abuse accusations to his girlfriend.
He has to earn the trust of Brian Cashman and his teammates.
Despite that, he has reminded the Yankees how valuable his arm could be to the club.
Overcoming a delay in the second game of the season Toros del Este faced Tigres del Licey.
It featured a pair of Bronx pitchers facing off in the Dominican capital. Albert Abreu vs Domingo Germán.
Domingo Germán vs Albert Abreu
This game featured two prospects of the Yankees farm system that could be a future rotation lineup.
Albert Abreu took the mound and struck out the side in the first inning. Went through the next two frames as well before running into trouble in the fourth.
Abreu surrendered a leadoff walk to former Yankee farmhand Abraham Almonte. Then balked Almonte over to second. He later missed a sharp grounder that caused him to see Almonte score from third.
Three ⅔ innings, two hits, one run, five strikeouts, and two walks on 64 pitches, the right-hander’s night was done.
Germán was just short of sensational. For someone who hasn’t pitched since 2019 that is a great sign for Yankees fans.
He went through Licey’s lineup by mixing his pitches well. Despite a shaky start walking one batter and hitting another, he struck out the side in the second.
Germán ended his night after four frames with only the first-inning walk and seven strikeouts.
Like I said just short of sensational.
The Yankees have a fresh arm that can help Gerrit Cole carry the load through a full season that is proposed for 2021.
In addition, Domingo Germán can look back at 2019 as we will look at 2020, glad it’s over and ready to redeem ourselves.
