Will The Cano Suspension Lead DJ Lemahieu To Queens?

New York Mets second baseman Robinson Cano tested positive for the performance-enhancing drug stanozolol. As a result, the Mets will be without Robinson Cano for the entire 2021 season, due to a suspension. Who do the Mets now turn to at second base? Does this lead DJ Lemahieu to Queens?

DJ Lemahieu

Robinson Cano’s suspension freed up tons of money for the Mets, but the loss of Cano is hefty. DJ LeMahieu is now a player that the Mets turn their focus to this offseason.

DJ LeMahieu is arguably the best second baseman in the MLB, and lucky enough for the Mets, he is a free agent. LeMahieu led the majors with a .364 batting average in 2020, becoming the second player in the modern era to win batting titles in both leagues. The batting title in the National League came in 2016 when LeMahieu had a .348 average on the Rockies. LeMahieu also had a .421 on-base percentage and 1.011 OPS, which were tops in the American League, and he finished third in the AL MVP voting.

A lot of players have high batting averages and don’t hit a lot of home runs. But for LeMahieu, he is a great home run hitter. DJ LeMahieu had 10 home runs in the MLB’s shortened season, as well as 26 home runs in 2019. Add on the fact that LeMahieu is a three-time Gold Glove winner.

What happens if the Mets don’t sign a second baseman?

Robinson Cano’s suspension gave Steve Cohen and the New York Mets an extra 20 million to spend this offseason. The Mets may save this amount to go after Trevor Bauer, J.T Realmuto, and George Springer, rather than DJ LeMahieu.

The Mets have tons of other options if they don’t want to sign LeMahieu. The Mets can move Jeff McNeil to second base, or even Andres Gimenez, who will probably be on the Mets bench if they don’t go with him at second.

If the Mets don’t want to move McNeil or Gimenez, they can sign a cheaper Free Agent and second baseman other than LeMahieu. These second basemen include Tommy La Stella, Jonathan Villar, Kolten Wong, Cesar Hernandez, and even Dee Gordon. La Stella is probably the best option, as he can play multiple positions. La Stella was an All-Star in 2019 and gets on base a lot.
