This just in: The Giants announced that they have placed edge rusher, Kyler Fackrell, on IR with a calf injury. Fackrell is tied for second on the team in sacks with 3.0. Dexter Lawrence also has three. This injury occurred last Sunday in the Giants’ 19-17 victory over the Bengals. Fackrell will miss at least the next three games with the injury.
In addition to this move, the Giants made a flurry of other moves. Tight End Kaden Smith, Right Tackle Matt Peart and Wideout Dante Pettis were all activated off of the COVID-19/reserve list this afternoon. They are all eligible to return to practice tomorrow.
Smith has been a sure-handed option for the Giants when they decide to come out in two Tight End sets. He also offers better blocking ability than starter Evan Engram. On the season, Smith has 14 receptions on 17 targets with 87 yards. He is still searching for his first score of the season. It is clear that the Giants like Smith in short-yardage situations so this is an important guy to get back.
Rookie tackle Matt Peart has spent the majority of the season playing as a rotational offensive lineman. In his limited snaps, however, he has impressed Giants fans and coaches. He has held his own against some of the league’s premier pass rushers. Joe Judge has taken an interesting approach when it comes to the offensive line this season but whatever he is doing it is working as the unit has looked better and better as the season has gone on. Peart, I’m sure will be part of the rotation as soon as coach Judge sees fit.
Dante Pettis has yet to take a snap for the Giants as his Covid diagnosis came right after he was claimed off waivers from the San Fransisco 49ers a few weeks ago. Pettis was a former second-round pick of San Fransisco and he had a successful first season in the league. However, he has trended downward as of late. After hauling in 27 passes in his rookie year, he has just 11 receptions over the last two seasons. He has not recorded a reception during the 2020 campaign in five games.
Other Roster Moves
In order to make room for these three on the active roster, the Giants waived defensive back Montre Hartage and kicker/punter Ryan Santoso. Both had spent time on the practice squad this season. In addition to this Tight End, Nate Wieting‘s and Wide Receiver Derrick Dillion‘s positions on the practice squad were terminated.
