Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi have competed to become two of the greatest players of all time. However, the two have been at such an equally high level for so many years, it’s difficult to put one over the other. Here, we’ll make a case for each of them, as to why they could be considered the greatest soccer/football player of all time.
The Case for Lionel Messi
Barcelona winger Lionel Messi will go down in history as one of the greatest players in history. However, there are some accomplishments and records still yet to be achieved by the Argentinian. Messi, who holds the record for the most amount of Ballon D’ors, is phenomenal on the ball.
However, eyebrows have been raised in recent years, where he struggled in big games in the Champions League. Despite being about two years younger than his Portuguese rival, he’s held very similar stats to Cristiano Ronaldo, which leaves fans to wonder how much more he has in store for us. The wingers hold many notable records including most goals scored in a calendar year (including only Europe’s top five leagues). Messi also holds the record for most goals in history amongst Europe’s top five leagues.
The Case for Cristiano Ronaldo
Portuguese forward Cristiano Ronaldo seems almost invincible at his best. He has dominated in three different world-class leagues and has proved he can do it just about anywhere. At 35 years of age, Ronaldo has shown time and time again that age is just a number. Ronaldo guarantees success wherever he goes, even winning a European Cup with Portugal. However, despite being multiple years older, and having played many more games than Messi, he hasn’t proven himself statically.
The two are neck and neck in a multitude of categories although Ronaldo has played many more games than him. Ronaldo still has a large trophy cabinet of his own, with the most amount of times won top scorer in the Champions League and the most amount of UEFA player of the year awards.
Questions To Ask About Lionel Messi
Although Messi has proven how skilled he is, questions can be asked if Messi can bring success to a team without enough support. Despite playing alongside Sergio Aguero, Angel Di Maria, and more, Messi is yet to win a single major competition with Argentina. Over many years, the Argentinian captain hasn’t found success with his country. Furthermore, in recent years La Pulga has struggled in the Champions League with Barca.
In his prime, Messi received support from an amazing midfield duo in Xavi and Andres Iniesta. Additionally, within the last year or two, Messi has lead fans to believe that his best days are behind him.
Questions To Ask About Cristiano Ronaldo
Cristiano Ronaldo refuses to let age define his career, however, age may not be the only thing to worry about. Ronaldo has scored far too many goals to count throughout his career. However one might ask if any of those goals were just about being in the right place at the right time.
Out of a whopping 624 goals, 121 came from penalties, which doesn’t require as much skill as a regular goal. Ronaldo has also been considered a selfish player by many, which may prove how he’s racked up so many goals. The Portuguese player may also be credited with such a large amount of goals because he’s a striker who’s only real duty is to score. Messi on the other hand is a great passer, who is still able to keep up with Ronaldo’s stats.
To decide who has had a better career is completely arbitrary. Messi has proved himself as a more versatile player who still has time to achieve plenty. Cristiano has proved himself to be a machine who is capable of being dominant wherever he plays.
