Welcome to a new NBA season. Tonight, the New York Knicks will be facing the Detroit Pistons in game one of the 2020 preseason.
Both teams were lottery teams and after the draft, both teams looked to improve. Last year the Knicks won the regular-season series versus the Pistons.
Both teams played against each other three times with the Knicks prevailing twice. In all three games, Julius Randle led the Knicks in scoring. Both teams have made roster changes so expect to see some new faces out there on both sides.
The Pistons will be a different team they’ve added some new players both young and old with the likes of Jerami Grant, Mason Plumlee, Josh Jackson, and Jahlil Okafor through free agency. They also drafted players like Killian Hayes, Saddiq Bey, and Isaiah Stewart. It’s safe to say they put a decent amount of talent around Blake Griffin and Derrick Rose.

The Knicks have also gone through a makeover. Bringing in a lot of new faces, they signed Alec Burks, Austin Rivers, Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, and Nerlens Noel through free agency and drafted high flying Obi Toppin and sharpshooting Immanuel Quickley in the draft, and picked up Myles Powell after the draft. This game should be fun to watch as both teams have a lot to prove.
Look for coach Tom Thibodeau to have the Knicks running this year. I’ve heard that he is implementing a fast pace style. He’s gonna try and get the most out of this roster. I think that should bring some excitement to a team that has been desperate for a culture change and a new identity. Thibodeau is known for his defensive schemes and putting players in a position to score. Guard play should be maximized as his system caters to point guards.
One player, in particular, Dennis Smith Jr. should have a bounce-back year. A player like him should excel just like the player they are playing against, Derrick Rose.
