The New Jersey Devils have signed free agent defenseman Sami Vatanen to a 1-year, $2 million deal. The defenseman returns to New Jersey after being traded to the Carolina Hurricanes in February. New Jersey recieved Janne Kuokkanen, Fredrik Claesson and a conditional 2020 fourth-round pick from the Hurricanes. In the playoffs, Vatanen played 7 games with the Hurricanes and notched 3 assists for a total of 3 points.
Sami Vatanen’s Second Stint With The Devils
Vatanen has played a total of 154 games with the Devils and has recorded 12 goals and 56 assists for a total of 68 points. Vatanen is a dynamic defenseman who contributes in both offensive and defensive ways. He will be re-joining a familiar Devils group who will look to overcome expectations and try and compete in the Eastern division. Fortunately, the addition of Vatanen will improve the defense. Meanwhile, the Devils have been in training camp since December 31st and will welcome Vatanan as soon as possible.
Sami Vatanen’s Place In The Lineup
Subsequently, Vatanen’s return will kick someone out of the lineup. Ty Smith has a very good chance of finally making the squad and has looked great on a line with Damon Severson in camp. Newcomers, Ryan Murray and Dmitry Kulikov are also trying to certify their spot on the lineup. Possibly Connor Carrick and Dmitry Kulikov could be added to the taxi squad to make room for Vatanen. Sami Vatanen will definitely become a top pairing defenseman and one of the top defenseman on the team.
