The New York Islanders pick up their second win this season. This Islanders team may be the best the fans have seen in the past ten years. The New York Islanders took one of the best teams in the league down in a thriller. Varlamov picked up his second shutout on his second start this season and glad to see Pageau score a greasy goal tonight. Barzal was buzzing around, and overall great to see a well-played team win tonight.
The Islanders came out very slow to start the game. The Bruins had the puck most of the time. The Islanders couldn’t come upon any chances that they got during the first period. The Bruins on the other hand came put very fast and strong. Nick Leddy was very solid on defense during the first period and Varlamov played his tail off. Cizaiks came out very strong in the opening frame as well. The Bruins were shut down on their many chances and this stays a 0-0 game.
New York came out very strong in the second frame. Boston was equal to the task and had just as many chances as New York. Barzal turned on the jets this period. he looked like the all-star player he is. Tuukka Rask was very solid in goal and the Islanders couldn’t net one. The second period turned out to be a tennis game, back and forth. Adam Pelech let the cannon lose and had 4 shots on goal. During this second period, this was the Islanders team that fans like to see. This remains a tight 0-0 game.
Varlamov continued to play very solid in goal and continued to look like a top 3 goalie in the division. This period, like the first, stayed very tight. To be honest this was a pretty boring period. The Islanders had some good zone time but could not match Boston’s intensity. The Bruins came out very strong and it looked like the Islanders were a step back for the first half of this frame. Rask and Varlamov both denied every shot. This was a game purely based on goaltending, and in the end, Varlamov came on top.
Bruins defenseman Matt Grezelck was helped out of the arena with an apparent arm injury. This affected the Bruins, and Pageau found the back of the net for the first score of the game. New York’s defense stayed very strong during the last minutes of the game, and as a result, your New York Islanders take this one home 1-0.
The Islanders found a way to get the two points they needed. They had some outstanding defense and incredible goaltending in Semyon Varlamov. Fans, you should be impressed with how well the defense played this evening. Varlamov’s save percentage stays at 1.000 in a great team win. I saw some potential in the offense and a great aggressive performance by Jordan Eberle and Anders Lee. Overall Semyon earns my first star followed by Adam Pelech and Jean-Gaberial Pageau. Just a great win and I hope that they can build off of
The Islanders need to come out stronger. The Bruins were all over them most of the third and the whole first period. The forwards need to turn the wheels on and play the game they know how to play. Barzal looked like a nobody besides in the second period. Better possession of the puck is needed as well. I felt as if every time they got the puck they threw it right back to Boston, and I hope that is something Barry Trotz can work on in practice this week. Overall, I just love to see a bounce-back win against a great team and a great goaltender.
