“All gas, no break”. That is the motto for the New York Jets newest head coach Robert Saleh. 2021 is somewhat of new beginning as well with principle owner Woody Johnson about to resume his ownership duties with the Jets. There are plenty of fans that want to see a certain quarterback from Houston wearing the green & white jersey and expedite the rebuilding process. Jets general manager Joe Douglas has holes to fill on this roster.
We will see Douglas make trades this offseason but free agency begins on March 17th. Over The Cap projects the Jets to have about $63 million in cap space before they consider releasing some players. In years past the Jets have overpayed for some talent to come. But for a general manager that was won, Joe Douglas will do whatever it takes to win. With that said, here are the top 5 free agents targets for the New York Jets.
New England Patriots · OG · Age in 2021: 28.
Thuney has been as durable as durable can get it. Drafted in the 3rd round of the 2016 NFL Draft, the offensive guard from North Carolina State hasn’t missed a game in his four year career and has played in 100% of the Patriots Snaps in 71 of 80 games. Outside of Mekhi Becton, the Jets offensive line had been poor. The Jets gave up 43 sacks, eighth-most in the NFL. The Jets need durability up front. Thuney is a two time SuperBowl champion and can help Gang Green out.
Baltimore Ravens · OLB · Age in 2021: 29.
Judon spent his entire five seasons in Baltimore after being drafted by the team in the fifth round of the 2016 NFL draft. In 2020, Judon played in 14 games, accounted for six sacks, nine tackles for loss, and a safety. Over his five years in the NFL, Judon has played in 76 games, forced seven fumbles, has two fumble recoveries, 34.5 sacks, and 54 tackles for loss. The Jets need an outside linebacker in the worst way. Put him next to former teammate CJ Mosley and high energy players such as Neville Hewitt and Tarell Basham, you probably a legit linebacking core with Judon there.
San Francisco 49ers • CB • Age in 2021: 33.
Richard Sherman has gone out in public and said that Deshaun Watson should go to New York and play for the Jets. Ironically Sherman is a free agent. He is not the same player that he once was but is known throughout the league as a high character player. He also has a high football IQ and someone young players can look up to him as a teammate such as young Jets defensive backs Bryce Hall and Bless Austin. Sherman also gave high praise to his former defensive coordinator and now current Jets head coach Robert Saleh. Saleh has gotten the most out of his players. Sherman to the Jets is a no brainer here given their history together in San Francisco.
Chicago Bears · WR · Age in 2021: 28.
Allen Robinson has been liking a lot of tweets involving the Jets. It’s no secret either that Robinson is talented and reliable. He’s No. 1 in contested catches since 2018 and had the most targets in 2020 with only one drop. Robinson has just four drops on 310 targets since 2019 and is the third-highest graded receiver in the slot, per Pro Football Focus. Mike Lafleur’s offense will get recievers break better. Having Miles Austin as a WR Coach helps too if Robinson were to choose Gang Green. He will get a boatload of money from whatever team lands his services but the Jets would instantly be better with Robinson on their WR depth chart.
Baltimore Ravens · DE · Age in 2021: 26.
Ngakoue is a force on any defense that he has played on. The 26 year old edge rusher finished the regular season with seven sacks and 16 tackles. Furthermore he can be a force on that defensive line with a blossoming trio of Quinnen Williams, John Franklin Myers and Foley Fatukasi. Furthermore the Jets haven’t had an edge rusher since John Abraham. Ngakoue can be that force the Jets have been looking for.
