The New York Islanders needed that point tonight, as they lose 3-2 to the Philadelphia Flyers in overtime. The Islanders currently have a 4 game losing streak, but they got something that was undoubtedly needed tonight. There are definitely improvements to be made for Barry Trotz and his team. But, the Islanders played a pretty good game tonight. If they would play the way they played in the second and third for the full game, Tonight would’ve been a win. For the game as a whole, the point will do.
Flyers control Period 1
The Islanders definitely didn’t start on time, they had a fairly rough first period. The start of the game was just awful, within the first 3 minutes and 38 seconds it was already 1-0 Flyers. Jakub Voracek scored that first goal, which was assisted by Claude Giroux and Scott Laughton. Semyon Varlamov absolutely could’ve made a save, either way, it was not a good goal to give up. Right after, Mathew Barzal takes a high sticking penalty that was killed. Without a doubt, the first period was dominated by the flyers. Following, Kevin Hayes scored a goal to make it 2-0 Flyers. Probably another avoidable goal that hurt them massively tonight. The awful first period was the reason the Flyers won. It was just inexcusable for the Islanders to play like that during the first period. Barry Trotz undoubtedly needs his team to play a complete game.
Huge Period 2 from the Islanders
In the second, the Islanders woke up. That 1st intermission was another example of the greatness of Barry Trotz. It was a totally different team in the second. The Islanders were able to break the ice 7 minutes and 31 seconds in, with a Jordan Eberle goal. Adam Pelech made a beautiful pass that earned him the assist on the goal. Less than 4 minutes later, they did it again. Scott Mayfield buried his first of the season from Nick Leddy and Mathew Barzal. They were able to keep the pressure on in the second, even though no goals were sores. They did have multiple power-plays but were unable to bury a power-play goal. It’s not really a surprise, considering the Islanders haven’t had a good power-play in a long time. Either way, the Islanders had an amazing second period.
Interestingly enough, the third period was scoreless. But, it was clear the Islanders had a better period than Philadelphia. A bunch of chances on the net, just unable to break the tie. Carter Hart stayed strong throughout the period, Varlamov didn’t give one up with limited opportunities. The Islanders were able to keep the energy from the second going, they were simply playing better. The third allowed them to get their first point in over a week. Though everything else was important, the point is what matters the most. So they go into Overtime knotted up at 2.
Flyers cap it off in Overtime
The Flyers came out in overtime, and it seemed like they just wanted to steal the game. Quite frankly, the Flyers had multiple chances before they buried the game home. Scott Laughton who had a chance right before was the one who called game. He just deked out Semyon Varlamov and slid it right past him. Nothing necessarily bad by the Islanders, just a nice goal that won the game 3-2 for the Flyers.
These two teams will meet again tomorrow night. Same time, in the same place, the Islanders will be looking for a different result. Even though tonight was a loss, it was a game to build on.
