Devils Win a Back and Forth Battle Over the Sabers 5-3

The Devils won a back-and-forth game with a score of 5-3 over the Buffalo Sabers. This snapped a three-game losing streak for the Devils. Carter Hutton started as the goaltender for Buffalo. Eric Comrie started in goal for New Jersey. Comrie made his first start with the Devils and he has not played since 2019. Lindy Ruff’s Devils relied on the rusty Comrie to be strong in net today and he was able to hold his own with 30 saves on 33 shots.

First Period

The Devils came out flying to start the game as Michael McLeod scored only 20 seconds into the game for his second of the season. The entire first period of the game the Devils put most of the pressure on the Sabers. This made it hard for the Sabers to escape out of their own end of the rink and find momentum.  The Devils ended the period with a goal by Andreas Johnsson his second of the season. He now has a goal in back-to-back games.

Second Period

Things changed in the second period as the Sabers came back to score twice in period. One from Curtis Lazar who tipped an incoming shot from Rasmus Ristolainen and then Rasmus Dahlin evened the game up with a blistering slap shot past goaltender Comrie. Though just as the period was expiring Miles Wood turned on the jets and scored on the breakaway with only .6 of a second left in the period to give the lead back for the Devils.

Third Period

The Devils took a 3-2 to lead into the third period.  The period started with Andreas Johansson in the penalty box for a face-off violation.  The Sabers tie the game up at 3 with a goal by Rasmus Ristolainen. This seemed to take the air out of their sales after the late goal by Miles Wood in the second period but he helped the Devils to yet again giving them the lead as he helped set up the game-winning goal to Michael Mcleoud his second of the game and third on the season. The Mcleod, Wood, and Bastian line was terrific in today’s game as they created a lot of opportunities.

At the end of the game, the Sabers spent a lot of time in the Devils’ end as they pulled goalie Carter Hutton to get that extra attacker with a 1:22 left in the third period. Comrie and the Devils were able to stave off the Saber’s last efforts. Miles Wood put the game away with the empty-net goal. The Devils were able to split the weekend games in Buffalo.  They were able to rebound well after a very tough loss in the shoutout on Saturday.
