The New York Islanders extend their point streak to 7 games, as they beat the Buffalo Sabres 3-1. An impressive win for the Islanders, as it seems that they’re firing on all cylinders. There wasn’t a weak spot for this team tonight, they did everything right. It should be noted, that the Sabres were playing their first game in 15 days. It was evident throughout the entire game that the Sabres were rusty. But, the Sabres also had a very incomplete lineup. All of these situations the Sabres were in, allowed the Islanders to play the way they did. Without a doubt, this was a game the Islanders should’ve won. So, it is a good thing that they came out victorious.
Smart Plays Lift the Islanders To Win
One of the most important parts of the Islanders’ game tonight, was their passing. The goals they scored tonight came off precise passes the allowed the pack to beat Linus Ulmark. Josh Bailey, made two excellent passes for primary assists. Unquestionably, Bailey’s passing had a great impact on the win. Anders Lee and Brock Nelson‘s goals were a direct result of a beautiful pass from Josh Bailey. The Islanders also were able to limit the Sabres to 0 shots in the third period. It’s really good to not allow an opponent to shoot when the team is already up 3-1. Simply, the Islanders put an excellent effort into their entire game.
Varlamov Continues Hot Stretch In Goal
Semyon Varlamov has been on fire as of late. Yes, he did give up a goal to Victor Olofsson tonight. But, he was lights out besides that. He made his best save when he surely robbed Olofsson of a goal. It looked like Olofsson had a definite goal with a wide-open net. But miraculously, Varlamov got over a stopped him. Varlamov as a whole saved 20 out of 21 shots. He had a save percentage of .952% and stopped all 19 shots even strength. If Varlamov wasn’t a brick wall tonight, this game could’ve been a lot worse for the Islanders.
Pageau Gets Game-Winning Goal In 2nd Period
Even though it was the 2-0 goal in the first period, Jean-Gabriel Pageau‘s goal was the game-winner. Pageau has now scored in the past 3 games and has 4 goals in that span. He just caught Ulmark by surprise and wristed it to around the toy department. Since being acquired last season, Pageau has been a key part of this Islanders team. This goal tonight just showed the fact that Pageau is huge to just get a goal that helps a team win a game. He is very smart with the puck and is a very prolific goal scorer. Pageau had a key part in tonight’s Islanders’ win!
Overall, tonight was a great night for the team in orange and blue. There isn’t that much to say because they played well. They see the Sabres again tomorrow, Barry Trotz would for sure like to see a similar performance from this group. Other than that, the Islanders had a complete team effort tonight and will look to repeat their performance tomorrow.
