Since the New York Knicks have required Derrick Rose, the club has been playing tremendous. At first many fans and media were confused by the Knicks trade for Derrick Rose. Fans thought this trade would mean less minutes for Immanuel Quickley. The media thought the Knicks were reaching by trading for a 34-year-old former MVP. Let us look at what this trade really brought the Knicks.
The Knicks are 3-1 since Derrick Rose was brought back to the garden. They are currently on a three-game winning streak which, has propelled them to the sixth seed in the eastern conference. In those four games as a Knicks, Derrick Rose is averaging 13 points per game in only 21 minutes however, the numbers do not tell it all. The former Memphis Tiger looks as explosive as ever. Often times getting to the paint at will. Yet the most important part of Derrick Rose’s game is his veteran savvy.
The Knicks are one of the youngest teams in the league. As a result, the Knicks often lean on Coach Tom Thibodeau because of his experience in the league. Derrick Rose brings an on court extension of the former coach of the year. With this being Derrick Rose’s third time playing under Thibodeau, I highly doubt any player has a better understanding of what coach wants. The coach’s trust Derrick Rose to close out games and make the correct plays. For a young team trying to make the playoffs, this type of experience is enormous.
With Derrick Rose on the court at the point guard position, Quickley has moved over to the shooting guard position. This has given the former Kentucky Wildcat a break from playmaking and allowing him to focus on scoring. With Derrick Rose orchestrating the second unit, the Knicks have begun to break out offensively. For instance, the Knicks scored 121 and 123 points in their last two games against the Rockets and Wizards. The Knicks previously had scored over 120 points just once before. This came in a early season matchup against the Bucks in which they put up 130. Another area that Rose has impacted was the play of Obi Toppin. Toppin scored 11 points against the Rockets which was one point shy of his career high.
Finally, as the season begins to progress one thing seems to remain. The Knicks are for real and they will not back down. Adding a veteran presence like Rose gave the club a boost. The Knicks were one of the worst offensive teams in the NBA. With Rose on the team, the Knicks hope to improve on that side of the ball. Coach Thibodeau and the Knicks found the correct piece to add to his team. The club can only improve from here on out. Just how much they improve will be on the shoulders of Derrick Rose.
