Before this game, the Devils were on a three game losing streak. The Buffalo Sabers have recently beaten the Devils in two straight games. The Devils were able to outshoot the Sabers the last time they met, but Linus Ullmark was incredible in that game, frustrating the Devils forwards.
In the first period the Devils started off fast overwhelming Ullmark by firing shots at him and keeping him focused and awake. A shot by Nico Hischier made Ullmark make a wonderful save as he was forced into the splits. The game was delayed immediately after to check on Ullmark to see if he was ok. He was able to finish out the period. Shortly after the Sabers scored, Riley Sheahan scored on a Devils turnover in the Devils zone. This was Sheahan’s second of the season. Later in the period, the Sabers went on a power play because of a slashing penalty from Damon Severson on Taylor Hall. The Devils did avoid a second goal of the period with a nice penalty kill. The first period ended with the Sabers on top 1-0.
The middle period began with the Sabers replacing their goaltender, Ullmark with Carter Hutton. The Devils took advantage of the goalie change with a goal from Jesper Bratt. He weaved into the Sabers zone and snapped the puck top shelf to tie the game at one. Unfortunately, immediately after Lazar found himself on a breakaway and forced Dmitry Kulikov to the penalty box for slashing. On the power play, Casey Mittelstadt was able to find the back of net to give the Sabers the lead back 2-1. The Devils did have a chance to even up the score again, but were unable to score on two power plays.
The Devils got the break they were looking for as former Devil Taylor Hall was sent to the penalty box for high sticking. The penalty was considered a double minor because blood was drawn on the play. This gave the Devils four minutes on the powerplay. Thanks to Miles Wood, the Devils were able to tie the game at two with time left on the double minor power play. The Sabers were able to avoid another goal for the rest of the power play. The Devils quickly struck again when Hischier backhanded it past Hutton for his first goal of his season.
This gave the Devils a 3-2 lead. The Devils still had trouble staying out of the penalty box. Travis Zajac went into the box for high sticking. The penalty kill struggles continue as the game tying goal came from Sam Reinhart’s tap in. This sent the game to overtime.
In overtime, the Devils took very little time as Pavel Zacha found a lane and fires the puck past Hutton to break the Devils losing streak at three! A much needed win for the Devils!
