The Islanders score 5 unanswered goals in the third period on route to a win over the Boston Bruins.
Player and Team Impressions
The Islanders controlled the game almost the whole way throughout. Oliver Wahlstrom played a great game, once again showing that he belongs in the NHL. Semyon Varlamov shut the door as usual with some solid saves on Bruins scoring chances. Mat Barzal once again showed off his incredible puck moving skills picking up 2 points. Anders Lee and J.G. Pageau continue their high scoring season both potting a goal. Every line played a solid 2 way game tonight, killing off penalties and scoring the other way, and scoring they did a lot in the Islanders win.
Adam Pelech opened the scoring for the Islanders with his first of the season 3:16 into the game. Just over 9 minutes later, Mat Barzal blazed through the neutral zone and buried one to make the score 2-1. In the second period, the Islanders did not score but the Bruins tied the game 2-2. The third period is where the lid was blown off Nassau Coliseum.
Opening the scoring 5:41 into the third, Anthony Beavillier stripped the puck in front and potted a goal past an unsuspecting Jaroslav Halak. 5 minutes later, a 2 on 1 broke out, Barzal threw a saucer pass across the slot to a wide open Jordan Eberle who made a fantastic move to fool Halak and score the goal. With 8 minutes left, Casey Cizikas took a delay of game penalty. On that penalty kill, J.G. Pageau broke up a passing play giving him a breakaway, Pageau once again buried a short handed goal. Just over 2 minutes later, with a scrimmage in front of the net, Anders Lee was able to slide an easy one past a flat Halak. Finally, with the score being 6-2, Oliver Wahlstrom found an opportunity, and flipped the puck into the net from the slot making the final score 7-2 in an Islanders win.
The Islanders win and made a statement. They are here to compete again for the Stanley Cup, not to be part of the draft lottery. With this win the Islanders hand the Bruins their third straight regulation loss to the Islanders this season, the Bruins only have 4 regulation losses this entire season. the whole team was locked in tonight, and with Varlamov playing like a Vezina caliber goalie, this team could go far into the postseason.
