This was the third meeting between the Rangers and the Devils this season. It was the first time that this Hudson River rivalry was held in New Jersey at the Prudential Center. Recently the Devils have been struggling. Going into this game on a three-game losing streak. Also, the Devils have not won a game during this five-game homestand.
The Devils came out flying as they outshot the Rangers 14-6. A hot start to the game was something they were looking to get them energized after losing some tough games. Jack Hughes was able to get the scoring going with a puck that he had found that came off the end boards. That was his fifth goal of the season and his fourth point against the Rangers this year. Hughes really came out flying in the first period. He also came close early on as he just missed one off the post. This was a positive first period for the Devils.
The second period was a different story for the Devils as they blew their one-goal lead. They were still able to outshoot the Rangers 9-6 in the middle period but, the Rangers capitalized on their opportunities. Chris Kreider tied the game at one on the power play. He taped in a cross-ice pass from Ryan Strome. This was Kreider’s 11th goal of the season. He was not done as he scored again on a broken play where the puck got deflected off him past Blackwood. Devils were able to sustain some of their energy from the last period but unable to add to their one-goal lead.
The third period continued to go the Rangers’ way. Chris Kreider continues to stay hot as earns himself his third goal of the game. He now has two hat tricks in the last five games. The Rangers took a 3-1 lead. The Rangers just did not stop however, they added a fourth goal from Pavel Buchnevich. This led the Devils to pull goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood. Aaron Dell came in to replace him. Rangers were still not done as Brendan Smith joined the party along with number one pick Alexis Lafreniere. Rangers went on to win the game 6-1. It is important to note that Igor Shesterkin left the game with an apparent injury. This was a terrible display for the Devils as they outshot the Rangers 36-19. The Devils look to rebound against the Rangers Saturday afternoon at 1 pm. This was a terrible display for the Devils.
