The Islanders win again, backed by Ilya Sorokin for a 5-2 win over the Buffalo Sabres.
The Islanders dominated right out of the gate, outshooting the Sabres 18-6 in the first. Matt Martin was dominant in the game, leading the forecheck and scoring some goals. Sorokin played very well stopping 16 of 18 shots but allowed 2 goals off of bad rebounds, hopefully Mitch Korn can help with that. This was an Islanders hockey game, with the Islanders with over 40 shots on net with 5 goals. The Islanders were unfortunately unable to capitalize on their 3 powerplay opportunities tonight, but still got the win
Islanders Win Review
Midway through the first period, with a play by Mat Barzal to drive to the net, he was able to find an open Noah Dobson for the first goal of the game. Also in the first, after a solid forecheck by the Islanders, Matt Martin was below the red line but was able to absolutely bury a shot off the head of Jonas Johansson for the Islanders’ second of the game.
In the second, the Islanders started with a powerplay, in which Oliver Wahlstrom showed how good he is in the offensive zone, with 3 plays to keep the puck in the zone. Although the Islanders had chances, Johansson made some solid saves and the penalty was killed off. Following the penalty kill, the Sabres took the momentum back, resulting in Taylor Hall getting a goal. After that goal, the Islanders really took the momentum back and Anthony Beauvillier was able score on a breakaway to add to the Isles lead with 5:02 left in the period.
In the third, the Islanders came out the gate looking a bit sluggish. Subsequently, the Islanders lack of possession lead an early opportunity for the Sabres resulting in a shot off the post. This was a wakeup call for the Islanders as Jordan Eberle was able to strip the puck away from the Sabres and throw it to Anders Lee who shot it off Johansson’s pad leaving a rebound for Eberle who scored. Late in the third, Matt Martin was able to do it again, fighting for position in front, Martin was able to shove a loose puck into the net. The Islanders ended the game with a win
Final Thoughts On Islanders Win
The Islanders have now won 3 straight games, and have a six game point streak. With solid offense play, and even better defense, the Islanders were able to beat the Sabres again. Oliver Wahlstrom was held off the score sheet, ending his five game point streak at 6 points. The Islanders are now tied for the top spot in the East division with Washington at 30 points. With multi point games from Casey Cizikas, Matt Martin and Jordan Eberle, the Islanders are finding their offensive groove. Hopefully this team can continue this trend as they face the Sabres two more times in the next 3 days.
