The New York Islanders advance their point streak to 7, after beating the Buffalo Sabres 5-2. The Islanders undoubtedly had a great performance, even though it took them a little bit to get going. Overall, the islanders mostly dd everything right. For the first time this season, the Islanders debuted their navy blue retro reverse uniforms. They are now 1-0 in those uniforms. The Sabres aren’t the best team, and the Islanders needed to beat them. It would have undoubtedly been a really bad loss if they would’ve lost this game. They listened to Barry Trotz and played a game to be proud of.
Sabres take an early 1-0 lead in the first Period
Within the first minute of the game, the Sabres got in front early. Along with that, Jacob Bryson scoring his first NHL goal. Semyon Varlamov was clearly screened on the shot, the Islanders got down early. But, this didn’t discourage the Islanders as they kept themselves in the game. Indeed, New York played within their signature defensive style. This kept the game 1-0. It should be noted that both teams got some solid chances, but the goalies stayed strong. Also, it could be said that the Islanders didn’t necessarily start on time. Clearly, they needed to wake up.
Islanders score 4 in the second Period
Coming into the 2nd period, New York looked like a totally different team. Quite frankly, a team that Buffalo couldn’t catch up with. Almost 4 minutes in Mathew Barzal scores one of the best goals in the NHL this season. He fought off the D-man, got in front, went between his legs, and somehow scored on Carter Hutton. This insane goal clearly gave the Islanders life. Around two minutes later Brock Nelson takes the lead from the Sabres. In a matter of 2 minutes, the Islanders completely wiped out the Sabres’ 1-0 lead. 3 minutes following Nelson, Cal Clutterbuck makes it 3-1 New York. It wasn’t done yet, Scott Mayfield gave the Islanders a 3 goal lead at the end of two.
In particular, the second period has been a struggle for the Islanders this season. Today, that was certainly not the case. Without a doubt, the Islanders played their best second period of the season. Four goals in a period isn’t too bad. It was a good period, but now it is lockdown time.
Islanders locked it down in the third period
To say the least, things got a little dicey in the first minute for the Islanders. Less than a minute in and 9 seconds after a power-play, Sam Reinhart cuts the game to two. For a very short period of time, it was a two-goal game. The Captain Anders Lee scores his 11th of the season to make bring it right back to three. Without a doubt, it was now lockdown time for New York. Jeff Skinner and the rest of the Sabres had a few chances, nothing beat Varlamov. With that, New York strolled to a 5-2 victory.
These teams will face-off once again Tomorrow at noon on NBC. The Sabres will look to get some revenue from their last two matchups with the Islanders.
