Yankees Tie Tigers 1-1 Behind Strong Pitching

Earlier this afternoon, the New York Yankees vs Detroit Tigers spring training game ended in a one-one tie. Ties occur in spring training, but not the regular season. Domingo German got the start at pitcher for the Yankees, while Matthew Boyd had the nod for the Tigers. Boyd struggled in 2020, but with a full offseason, this can be the year where he improves and become a bigger part of the Tigers rotation. He is also the opening day starter for the team. German was great today, striking out four batters in only two innings of work. Below I will discuss my thoughts on the game.

Yankees Pitching Dominates Tigers Lineup

After allowing 15 runs in a blowout 15-0 loss yesterday to the Philliesthe Yankees pitching was excellent in a rebound performance today. Starter Domingo German went two innings, and allowed one hit, no runs, no walks and struck out four. Relievers Nick Nelson and Michael King then combined to pitch three shoutout innings, allowing only two hits, no walks and two strikeouts. Later on, Luis Garcia and Tyler Lyons combined to pitch two more shoutout innings, allowing only hit in both innings combined and striking out two.

With the Yankees up one in the eighth inning, Luis Medina came into the ballgame and allowed four walks, prompting Detroit to tie the game. Luckily, Addison Russ and Luis Gil were able to keep them in check for the rest of the game. If the Yankees want to contend this year, their pitching depth must be consistent.

Yankees Offense Shut Down

The Yankees offense was shut down for the second straight day, as they totaled only one run on six hits. Aside from a Gleyber Torres homerun, Matthew Boyd and the Tigers pitching held the Yankees in check. Since it is only spring training, it isn’t a big worry, but the team is capable of much more.

What’s Next?

With this tie, both teams remain at their respective records. The Tigers are still 3-2, while the Yankees remain at 3-2 as well. Detroit’s next contest is tomorrow and they will be going up against the Baltimore Orioles. The Yankees will play the Pittsburgh Pirates tomorrow. These teams will meet twice during the regular season.
