Coming into this game against the Islanders, the Devils was looking to get back on their winning ways. The last time they won was against the Boston Bruins by a final of 1-0. Before this game the visiting Islanders were on a seven game winning streak. They are hot and they were looking to beat the Devils for the fourth time this season.
The first period period was a mixed bag. The Devils did a good job on the penalty by killing two Islander power plays. The Devils have been struggling killing power plays all year long. Another positive is Pavel Zacha got the scoring going with his seventh of his season. This was the quickest he has ever got to seven goals in his career. The Devils were looking good to get out of the first period with a 1-0 lead but a quick snap shot from Oliver Wahlstrom tied the game at 1.
The period began with a bang as Janne Kuokkanen taped in a shot off the post from Yegor Sharangovic. This gave the Devils a 2-1 lead. This was Kuokkanen’s 4th of the season. Recently Kuokkanen has stood out to me as he has been all over the ice, skating well and being aggressive in front of the net. The Devils were able to kill three penalties this period and four this entire game. They still have to find a way to stay out of the penalty box. There was one too many men on the ice penalty which is unacceptable. It was important to note that Jack Hughes might have saved a goal with a back check on Mathew Barzal. The period ended with the Devils leading 2-1.
That lead for the Devils disappeared quickly as Kieffer Bellows was left all alone up the middle and shot the puck in the back of the net to tie the game at two. Shortly after he gave the Islanders the lead as he made a power move past Nathan Bastian to open some space to score his second of the game. The Islanders took a 3-2 lead. The Devils tried for one final push, but were unsuccessful in evening the game at three. The Devils fall to the first place Islanders by the final of 3-2. This was another frustrating loss by the Devils. They were again unable to successfully complete strong games against tough teams. The Devils and Islanders face off again tomorrow at 5pm at the Rock.
