3-1 Islanders Loss Ends A 9 Game Win Streak

The Islanders‘ loss ends their winning streak at the hands of the Washington Capitals. The final was 3-1.

First Period Impressions In Islanders Loss

The Islanders came out looking fresh, controlling the puck for the majority of the first ten minutes. Capitals starting goalie Ilya Samsonov had to make some solid saves very early in the game on multiple chances.

The Islanders played a very solid skating period, resulting in a powerplay halfway through the period. They ultimately could not capitalize on the powerplay.

Their centermen were able to dominate in the faceoff circle, winning 90% of the faceoffs taken.  With the Capitals playing the night before, the resulting fatigue led to the Islanders playing their game for most of the period. Late in the period, the Capitals got a few solid chances on the net, but Semyon Varlamov made the saves.

They entered the second period in a 0-0 tie.

Second Period Impressions In Islanders Loss

Only 30 seconds into the period, Josh Bailey had an excellent chance that was stopped by Samsonov.

Although the Islanders had momentum, Casey Cizikas got his stick caught in the skates of Nicklas Backstrom resulting in a tripping penalty. The Islanders kept the pressure on the Capitals and killed off the penalty.

A very solid chance for Alex Ovechkin, blowing by J.G. Pageau but Varlamov came up with the stop. After a bad break for the Islanders, an open Evgeny Kuznetsov was able to shoot a puck off the post that T.J. Oshie potted in.

The Islanders once again took a penalty late in the period. This time, however, the Capitals scored off an Ovechkin rocket. Beauvillier had a solid chance but Samsonov made the save. Garnet Hathaway generated a solid breakaway chance that Varlamov handled.

The period ended in a 2-0 lead for the Capitals.

Third Period Impressions In Islanders Loss

After a Scott Mayfield penalty, Nicklas Backstrom was able to bury an easy goal less than a minute in. The Islanders finally got a break as Oliver Wahlstrom was able to convert on a powerplay chance. That made it 2-1 Washington.

Immediately after scoring, however, the Islanders took a bad call leading to the Capitals taking the momentum back.

The Islanders had chances but could not capitalize. With a minute left the Islanders pulled the goalie in hopes of a comeback. Ovechkin made a fantastic play to fight Kieffer Bellows off the faceoff and kill a few more seconds off the clock. Barzal and Bellows had chances but could not get it by Samsonov.

The Islanders’ 9 game win streak comes to an end.

Final Thoughts

The Islanders did not capitalize on chances, and when they did Ilya Samsonov took the play away. They were outfought and outwaited, the Islanders are back in action on Thursday.
