The Islanders win a thriller in Philly, 2-1 in Overtime.
First Period Thoughts Isles Win
Following the 5-1 win a few days ago, the Islander came out struggling early in this one. The Flyers came out strong and dominated play throughout the first 9 minutes of play. Mid-way through the period the Flyers outshot the Islanders 9-1, but a bad penalty by Travis Konecny killed the momentum. The Islanders had solid opportunities on the powerplay, having a few shots. Even with the solid chances for Oliver Wahlstrom and Nick Leddy, Brian Elliot was able to stop them and the Flyers would clear. Ilya Sorokin played very solid in the first, making 12 saves in the period with an incredible one on a Nolan Patrick chance late.
Second Period Thoughts In Islanders Win
Right off the faceoff, Matt Martin was caught holding onto Jakub Voracek and the Flyers went on the powerplay. A few solid chances for the Flyers on the powerplay but the Islanders were able to clear the puck out. Late on the kill, a 2-on-1 opportunity developed for Josh Bailey and Brock Nelson but the Islanders could not capitalize. 5 minutes into the period, a terrible play at the line led to a Flyers 2-on-1, Voracek made the pass across but Scott Mayfield made the play to break it up.
With 12:14 left in the period, an open shot for Oliver Wahlstrom in the slot ringed off the post and went out of play. More opportunities were presented to the Wahlstrom line but were shut down by the Flyers defense. A bad play for Ryan Pulock led to Claude Giroux being able to find Oskar Lindblom for a goal. Sorokin made 13 saves on 14 shots in the period in another solid period for the goalie, a key contributor to the Islanders’ win.
Third Period Thoughts In Isles Win
The Islanders came out with momentum, being down meant they were gonna be the desperate team in the period. An early chance for the Isles after a keep-in at the line led to an Oliver Wahlstrom goal. Right away the Flyers took back the momentum, with a chance from the point that Sorokin stopped. A couple of solid chances for the Flyers midway through the period were shut down by Sorokin. The majority of the period was back and forth hockey, with solid chances either way that led to no goals. A late hooking penalty by Nick Leddy resulted in the rest of the third period on the penalty kill.
Overtime Thoughts In Islanders Win
The Islanders still had to kill 11 seconds on the penalty but were able to win the faceoff and keep possession. With Leddy out of the box, the Islanders and Flyers played 4 on 4 for the majority of Overtime. A solid opportunity for the Islanders was shifted wide by the Flyers defense. A wonderful play by J.G. Pageau led to an Anthony Beauvillier goal for an Islanders win.
