The Devils came off a tough loss to the yesterday by a final of 4-3. In last night’s loss, the officials missed two obvious high sticking penalties. One of the missed high sticking penalties resulted in blood being drawn from the player’s face which would have been a four-minute power play. The Devils came into this game looking to rebound and get their first win of the season against the Capitals.
The first period started off with promise as Travis Zajac came crashing in hard on the net. New Jersey came close to scoring at the beginning of the period but they were unable to capitalize. Though Alex Ovechkin was able to capitalize a pass from Evgeny Kuznetsov on the side of the net. The Capitals took a 1-0 lead. Ovechkin constantly haunts the Devils. The Capitals were not done as they scored again in the period as the Devils turned the puck over in their end as Nicklas Backstrom whipped one past Scott Wedgewood. The Devils have to work on turning the puck over. This seems to be constantly happening. The period ended with the Devils trailing the Capitals 2-0.
This was a better s period for the Devils than the first as they were able to keep the puck out of the net. That being said the Devils were unable to score in the period. It was not like they didn’t have chances as they had two power plays that were unsuccessful. Ilya Samsonov was great for the Capitals in that period making multiple big saves. New Jersey ended the period frustrated and still looking for their first goal of the game. The period ended with Capitals still ahead 2-0.
The Devils were unable to sustain the pressure they had from the second period as they headed into the third and final period. In the early stages of the period, Mikhail Maltsev turned the puck over and Conor Sheary wristed one home, and the Capitals took a 3-0 lead. The Devils really need to clean up their turnovers as it has got out of hand. The wheels came off for the Devils as Ovechkin scored again with a pin-point slap shot to make it 4-0. I think the Devils have seen enough of him this year. The Capitals defense along with Samsonov kept the Devils from finding the back of the net. They completed the shut-out and won the game by the final of 4-0. The Devils look to rebound with a win on Sunday at 5:30 against the Boston Bruins.
