Pre Game Preview
The New York Rangers will take on the Washington Capitals tonight in a period where every game counts. The Rangers sit in 6th place in the East Division 6 points out of a playoff spot. The Capitals sit in 1st place in the East Division with what seems to be a clear path to the playoffs. The Rangers are heading into the game at a .500 win %, but need to play at a .750 for the rest of the season for a playoff hope.
Mika Zibanejad has been heating up as of late after a slow start to the season. Zibanejad last season scored 5 goals, yes 5 goals against the Caps last season and let’s hope he can channel that inner beast tonight. Rangers star defenseman Adam Fox will also need to keep up his stellar play for a win against the caps. Goalie Igor Shesterkin will also need to play great for the Rangers to get a win tonight against one of the hottest teams in the league. The Rangers will be looking for revenge on the Capitals after falling 5-4 in D.C. on Sunday. It could be the second time in two weeks that the Rangers eke out a win against the Capitals in the second half of the back-to-back against the Capitals.
The Capitals scored twice in the first 5 minutes putting the Rangers down 2-0 with 55 minutes still to play. Filip Chytil put in a breakaway goal to shorten the lead to 1. The Rangers played a weak first period, they did not register a shot till the 11th minute and let Washington walk over them in the first half of the period. The second half of the period was much better for them and they will enter the second period on the power play.
2-1 Capitals, it was an uneventful 2nd period with a lot of back and forth play. Both goalies played very well keeping the puck out the net. The Rangers kept the normally spectacular Capitals power play scoreless in the period. Other than that, there is not much to say.
5-2 Rangers! The New York Rangers score 5 unanswered goals after Washington got their first 2 in the first 5 minutes. The Rangers were all over the Capitals this period netting 4 goals and continuing their stellar penalty kill and with their win, tonight, give the Rangers the only winning record against the Capitals in the NHL. The goals were scored by Kakko (5), Fox (4), Panarin (9), and Buchnevich (14). Igor Shesterkin also stopped ten Capitals shots that came his way in the final period as the Rangers fought back following the first period 2-0 deficit. A huge team win all-around for the Rangers as they now head to Buffalo for two games.
This is the type of team we need to see if we want the playoffs. The way they rallied and never gave up is, unmatched. All their players played great and played with a never quit attitude. This is the type of team we want and this is the team we need. Hopefully, they can continue this play game after game. To get in the playoffs will be an uphill battle. If the Rangers play many more games like they did tonight, however, they could find themselves a playoff spot in the top four in the East.
