After a firework display last night from the New York Yankees offense, the Bronx Bombers secured another series win in game 2 of 3 today! Aaron Boone sat down Giancarlo Stanton and Gio Urshela for an off day. Although two hot hitters for the Yankees right now were on the bench today, the team still won.
Jameson Taillon Bounce Back Start And First Win
Jameson Taillon looked to bounce back from his first few starts after struggling when facing the lineup a second time. Taillon pitched pretty well in just 5 innings against the Tigers to get his first win in exactly 2 years and as a Yankees pitcher! With bases loaded in the 5th inning and 2 outs, the Tigers were threatening as Taillon struck out future Hall of Famer, Miguel Cabrera to end the inning. Jameson Taillon had 8 strikeouts with 3 walks but gave up 3 hits, one being a home run to Jeimer Candelario. Overall, he was very impressive compared to his first few starts, and hopefully, he can keep it up.
The Bullpen Comes In
Coming into today’s game, the Yankees bullpen was named the best in the league. In the 6th inning, Jonathon Loaisiga was called from the bullpen. Loaisiga has been one of the stronger weapons in the bullpen this year. There was no surprise that he pitched a shutout inning once again. He now has a 1.10 ERA in 12 games. Justin Wilson was then called for the 7th inning and struggled. After back-to-back walks with 2 outs, he gave up 2 runs from a bloop single by Jonathon Schoop making the score 6-3 Yankees. Chad Green was brought in to finish the 7th and he quickly struck out Akil Baddoo.
Green pitched in the 8th inning as well and gave up a solo home run to Niko Goodrum, 6-4 Yankees. He eventually finishes the inning with no further damage. With a 2 run lead in the 9th, Aroldis Chapman was called in to close the game. Chapman has been amazing so far during this season as he added his 5th save of the year with 2 strikeouts.
The Offense Was Alive Once Again
The offense was expected to be alive again after putting up 10 runs last night. Aaron Judge was hot once again with 3 RBIs and went 3-5. A healthy and locked-in Judge can be very scary this year! Gleyber Torres also is starting to swing a hot bat as he went 2-4 with 3 RBIs as well. Although the offense didn’t get a home run today, the Yankees only had 5 strikeouts and 6 walks as a team which is a good sign as the hitters are starting to be more disciplined.
The Yankees look to get their first series sweep against the Detroit Tigers tomorrow at 1 PM with Corey Kluber on the bump. Giancarlo Stanton and Gio Urshela are expected to be back in the lineup for more offensive strength. You can watch this game tomorrow on the YES Network or listen on WFAN Radio.
